This course looks at the political and intellectual history of ‘political Islam’ in Egypt since the early 1870s. Proceeding along a chronological trajectory, the course takes students through the key events have shaped the development of Islamic political thought since Jamal al-Din al-Afghani’s visit to Egypt and his encounter with Mohammed Abduh in 1872, and how the intellectual current he and others initiated has given the rise of various socio-political movements and political organizations that define themselves in terms of Islamic references, including the Muslim Brotherhood.
