Overview
This course aims to introduce and discuss the most influential theoretical perspectives in International Relations Theory (IR Theory) through cases drawn from Middle East politics. It seeks to explore how different theoretical approaches help us understand the interrelationships between the domestic, regional and global dimensions of Middle East politics. In that vein, the course first starts with a discussion of the emergence of the modern international system and the dynamics of the modern Middle East state system in the post-Ottoman era. Then it discusses different variants of Realist and Liberal thinking in IR theory with their distinct takes on Middle East politics. The course then discusses English School and Constructivist perspectives and finally, it moves on to explore variants of Critical IR Theory. The course concludes by evaluating the explanatory and interpretive power of different theoretical perspectives in relation to Middle East politics.
