In order to understand our contemporary world, this course discusses key concepts in the context of modern time and beyond. More specifically, the course discusses how modernity and its aftermath have shaped our conceptions of the “human,” human-things relations, time, future, and space (or urbanism). The increasing complexity of the contemporary world, due to the technological developments, is tackled by discussing concepts like postnormal times, transhumanism, and globalization. In short, this course provides an overview of the human conditions in our contemporary world.
An Egyptian thinker and former professor of political science at Cairo University. Heba Raouf was a research fellow and a visiting professor at the University of Oxford, the American University in Cairo, Berkeley University, and Westminster University, She was also part of the editorial board of the Oxford Encyclopedia of Islam and Women. She has many contributions to the fields of politics and sociology in Arabic and English. Currently she is working as an Assistant Professor at Ibn Khaldun University in Istanbul.
