Professor of Sociology at the American University of Beirut, director of the Center for Arab and Middle Eastern Studies, and the head of its Islamic Studies program.
Professor of Sociology at the American University of Beirut, director of the Center for Arab and Middle Eastern Studies, and the head of its Islamic Studies program. He is also the Editor-in-Chief of the Arab Journal of Sociology, Idafat. Hanafi is also the President of the International Sociological Association since 2018. Before that, he was Vice President and Member of the Board of Trustees of the Arab Council for Social Sciences (2012 - 2016). He is also the founding director of the online portal on the social impact of scientific research on/from the Arab world (Athar). His most important books are: Arab Research and the Knowledge Society: A New Critical View (with R. Arvanitz) and "Addressing the rupture between the religious and social sciences: Is the morning coming soon?
